Into The Tree Line. Bigfoot Sightings in May 2026.

Welcome to Stranger Times' monthly round-up of newly recorded Bigfoot and Sasquatch sightings, drawn from the BFRO database. Eight reports during May span Michigan's Upper Peninsula, the Idaho backcountry, the Berkshire Mountains of Massachusetts, the Ohio River valley, Washington's Cascade corridor and West Virginia's Monongahela wilderness. Two themes appear repeatedly across otherwise unrelated cases. Witnesses describe multiple creatures apparently acting together, and several reports involve immediate vocal responses arriving from different directions after calls or knocks made by the witnesses themselves. Both patterns appear in independent reports from different states, investigated by different researchers. Neither sits comfortably inside a simple explanation.

Ten teenage campers report three nights of escalating encounters with multiple creatures in Payette National Forest, including coordinated circling, tree-cross formations and handprints on vehicles

A ten-person camping group in Payette National Forest reported three nights of activity near two remote campsites over the May bank holiday weekend. On the first night, one member of the group saw a tall, dark figure standing a few yards behind a tent. He kept quiet until Monday morning because he did not want to alarm the others.

That changed at around 3am on Sunday. One witness left camp to use the toilet and saw what he described as a nine-foot-tall, dark-furred biped walking towards him from the tree line. He ran back to camp, retrieved a rifle and fired warning shots.

The group then drove to a second camp, where friends were staying off an abandoned road further into the forest. According to the report, the activity became more direct there. Multiple witnesses said three or more creatures circled the camp in the dark. They described them as around nine feet tall, bipedal and covered in fur. The witnesses also said the figures used tree cover and appeared to be trying to separate people from the group.

One witness reported firing directly at one of the creatures before the group withdrew. When they returned in daylight, they found broken trees arranged into sideways crosses in a wide circle around the second campsite, with branch formations at the centre. Handprints were found on two vehicles. Footprints and possible nests were also reported near the first camp.

The group comprised ten teenagers from Parma, Idaho, most of them eighteen years old. BFRO investigator Matthew Moneymaker spoke with two witnesses by phone and said he believed they were telling the truth. He also noted that the location was remote, with the nearest campground around thirty minutes away by vehicle. Given the area’s prior report history and the number of daylight observations claimed in this case, Moneymaker assessed the presence of at least three sasquatches as the most direct reading of the report. A previous case from the same area, BFRO Report 78573, recorded a paddleboarder seeing two large figures near the Meanders section of the Payette River north of McCall. bfro

The claimed circling and attempts to split the group have a close parallel in Two Massive Sasquatch Chase Away US Marine Team During Mission in California National Forest 1995, where trained military personnel reported multiple creatures using cover and movement to isolate individuals in remote terrain.

🔍 High Strangeness Note: Before the main Sunday night sighting, one witness reported a sudden, severe headache. Similar physical effects appear in some UAP close-encounter cases and in a smaller set of high-strangeness Bigfoot reports, though they remain difficult to assess from witness testimony alone. The tree formations found the next morning, sideways crosses set in a circle with branch constructions at the centre, are harder to place inside ordinary animal behaviour. Another witness also reported being whistled at from different directions while alone in the forest, in what he took to be a deliberate attempt to confuse his position.

New CURRENT: Michigan, Chippewa County | May 19, 2026 (Class B)

Two women and a Doberman encounter a large unidentified silhouette at Whitefish Point on Lake Superior, with prior animal disturbance at a second beach location earlier the same day

Two sisters from Lansing were searching for searching for fluorescent beach stones known locally as yooperlites at Whitefish Point, on the Lake Superior shore of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, when their Doberman refused to approach a large driftwood pile near the water. The dog backed away and growled.

One sister turned her flashlight towards the pile and saw a large, dark silhouette bent over on the far side. When the figure swung a leg over the logs as if crossing towards them, she shone the light directly at it. The figure dropped behind the pile. As the women retreated, a dark head rose twice above the logs before disappearing.

BFRO investigator Caroline Curtis interviewed both sisters separately. The dog’s behaviour earlier that day gave the report a longer frame. At noon, the same Doberman had refused to approach Barb’s Beach, a short distance from the lighthouse, growling and pulling back towards the car during two separate visits.

Curtis also noted that around thirty-five law enforcement officers, with helicopters and dog teams, had been searching woods approximately four miles south of the lighthouse that day. She raised the possibility that heavy activity in an area that is usually quiet may have pushed the animal, if that is what it was, towards the shoreline. A local contact also reported older Bigfoot activity at the point, although the named witness had not yet been interviewed directly. bfro

Northern Michigan already has a record of large, dark bipedal figures seen briefly and then lost from view. The Red-Eyed Creature Sighted Near Holly, Michigan, in 2008 shares the same broad profile: a massive dark form with little fine detail visible, present for only a short window before vanishing.

🔍 High Strangeness Note: The dog’s midday reaction at Barb’s Beach is the detail that keeps this from being a single dusk misidentification. It places the animal, or whatever scent or sound the dog registered, along the same shoreline hours before the visual encounter. Whitefish Point is a narrow spit of land jutting into Lake Superior, bordered by cranberry bog and limited road access beyond the lighthouse. If the search activity to the south pushed something north, the geography left few exits.

Husband and wife receive immediate vocal responses from two separate directions in Savoy Mountain State Forest, BFRO withholds GPS coordinates on assessment of year-round habitat

A retired New York State civil servant and Vietnam veteran was driving through the northern Berkshires with his wife when they stopped on an isolated dirt road inside Savoy Mountain State Forest. He made a single loud whoop out of the car window. The response came at once.

A wood knock sounded from the downhill side of the road, followed by a loud, irregular vocalisation. When he whooped a second time, a different voice answered from uphill. Both voices then became active, producing sequences the witness described as vocabulary rather than ordinary animal noise. Further knocks followed before a distant dog began barking and the sounds faded. The exchange lasted around five minutes. His wife insisted they stay in the car.

BFRO investigator Jonathan Wilk visited the site and searched both sides of the road. He found possible stick formations, several game trails and track impressions roughly two hundred feet from where the car had stopped. He took eDNA samples from the impressions and nearby ground. Wilk also referred to a century of reported encounters in the Berkshires and said he had experienced activity in other parts of the range himself.

Moneymaker declined to provide GPS coordinates for the location. His stated reason was that he assessed the site as likely year-round habitat rather than a passing corridor. bfro

The immediate dual-direction response has a parallel in Psychic or Cloaked Sasquatch Encounter Reported in Pennsylvania State Park, another Appalachian Ridge case where witnesses described replies that appeared directionally aware and coordinated.

🔍 High Strangeness Note: BFRO’s decision to withhold coordinates is not routine in every report. In this case, it points to a site the investigators regard as active enough to protect from attention. The witnesses described the sounds as language-like, with varied sequences and apparent organisation. That description does not map neatly onto known eastern woodland fauna, but it appears often enough in Appalachian reports to deserve careful handling rather than easy dismissal.

Retired state enforcement officer sees reddish-brown figure on embankment above a displaced boulder, Wind River Highway, Gifford Pinchot National Forest

A motorist driving south through Gifford Pinchot National Forest on Wind River Highway noticed rocks and dust still falling down a roadside embankment. A large boulder was resting at the road’s edge below, as if it had just come down.

She followed the debris line up to the top of the twenty-foot bank and saw a reddish-brown, furry figure standing motionless at the edge. Its back was turned to her. It appeared to be facing a female jogger about a hundred feet further down the road, who had passed the location moments earlier.

BFRO investigator Matthew Moneymaker identified the witness as Gael K., a seventy-year-old retired Washington State Department of Health enforcement officer. She had driven the Cascades for decades and was familiar with large animals in that terrain. She described the figure as roughly human height, possibly a juvenile, with light reddish-brown fur. Her closest distance was around forty feet.

Moneymaker also recorded that the boulder, estimated at four feet by two feet, may still be present at the roadside. bfro

Washington has produced a run of anomalous humanoid reports in recent months, including Flying 'Bigfoot' Reported Over Walla Walla, Washington: Hairy Humanoid Glides Across Highway 12. That account is stranger by several orders of magnitude, but it adds another point to a state already dense with reported activity.

🔍 High Strangeness Note: A four-foot boulder on a highway shoulder is useful because it may still be checked. If the rock remains where Moneymaker indicated, the report has a recoverable physical detail rather than witness memory alone. Skamania County sits near Mount St. Helens, inside a Pacific Northwest corridor with a long history of reports. The witness’s background in field enforcement and her familiarity with the terrain do not prove the identification, but they make the casual misidentification argument less comfortable.

Armed family member stands watch after loud knocks respond to a child's hatchet strikes, Yellow Creek, Bergholz, fourth report from this county in three months

A family was spending a late afternoon beside a lake on their five-hundred-acre property near Bergholz when the adults called the children back from nearby woods. Soon after, three loud wood knocks came from the same area the children had just left. The family then heard something large moving through the forest.

The son-in-law, described in the report as a large man, was visibly shaken. He remained on watch with a firearm while the others packed up and left. He later told the investigator that the sound was louder and more forceful than anything he had heard in a lifetime of country living.

The timing matters. A nine-year-old boy had been striking trees with a hatchet while the children played, ending with a dead ash stump that produced a sharp crack. The three knocks came from that same area within minutes of the children being called back.

BFRO investigator James Thompson visited the property and placed it within ten to fourteen miles of two other Jefferson County reports from the previous two months. The owners also described unexplained incidents on the land going back more than twenty years, including branches and rocks thrown at grandchildren in the woods fifteen years earlier. A neighbour separately reported seeing a large white or pale creature in the same area during the previous summer. bfro

The acoustic exchange, a child’s hatchet strikes followed by three deliberate knocks from the same location, fits the call-and-response pattern appearing across this month’s reports. The witness profile also has a parallel in Southeastern Ontario Teen Reports Close Encounter with Juvenile and Adult Bigfoot in 2014, where young people in wooded terrain appeared to be watched by something staying under cover.

🔍 High Strangeness Note: The neighbour’s report of a pale or white creature is rare, but not unknown, in Bigfoot literature. It could reflect colour variation, light conditions or a separate error in perception. The detail deserves caution because it comes through a neighbour rather than the central witnesses, but the recurrence of pale figures across separate reports makes it difficult to ignore completely.

Pre-dawn whoops behind a Toronto, Ohio property respond from two directions, location 1.8 miles from a 2025 railroad sighting

At 5:30am on May 1st, a woman letting her dogs out behind her home near Toronto, Ohio, heard a loud, deep whoop from woods about a hundred feet away. She went back inside. When she opened the door again, she heard a second whoop and ran to get her husband, visibly shaken.

The couple went back outside together. A third call then came from further down the hollow, on the opposite hillside. Her husband, a local businessman and experienced hunter, could not identify it. He found a Bigfoot vocalisation recording online and played it for his wife. According to the report, she responded: "That's it. That's it."

Investigator Thompson placed the location 1.8 miles from a May 2025 sighting on railroad tracks along Route 7, and thirty-four days after the Hammondsville field sighting below. Moneymaker identified nearby Wildcat Hollow, a deep and densely wooded gorge, as a plausible seasonal or year-round range, with cover from winter cold and summer heat. bfro

🔍 High Strangeness Note: Jefferson County now has four reports across three consecutive months, all within a fifteen-mile radius and all carrying acoustic features. The geography is doing a lot of the work here. The wooded ravines above the Ohio River valley, broken by pipeline corridors and powerline cuts, provide connected cover with limited disturbance. Whether the reports describe a single animal, a family group or a pattern of mistaken identification, the county can no longer be treated as a one-off entry in the database.

HISTORICAL (First Report): Ohio, Jefferson County | March 28, 2026 (Class B)

Hunter observes eight-and-a-half-foot figure near a Hammondsville powerline cut, BFRO investigator observes a second figure during the follow-up site visit

A hunter arriving at a property near Hammondsville at 8:30am saw a large black figure standing in a field near a powerline cut. The distance was estimated at around three hundred and seventy-five yards. The figure then covered roughly 150 yards in less than 15 seconds before disappearing over a hill crest.

The witness said it stayed upright throughout. Its movement appeared human to him, but the size and speed did not fit a person.

BFRO investigator James Thompson recreated the sighting with walkie-talkies, standing in the witness’s reported position and checking the line of sight. He estimated the figure’s height at about eight and a half feet. During the reconstruction, Thompson’s companion was waiting in the truck and reported seeing a black shape low near the treeline behind him. It vanished before he could turn for a better look.

Thompson said this was the third report he had personally investigated within five miles of the same location during the previous year. bfro

🔍 High Strangeness Note: The second observation during the field reconstruction is the awkward detail. On its own, it could be a shadow, a mistaken shape or an animal seen too briefly to identify. In the context of several nearby reports, it becomes harder to dismiss cleanly, though it still sits below the weight of the main witness account.

HISTORICAL (First Report): West Virginia, Randolph County | July 2012 (Class B)

Hiking couple in Otter Creek Wilderness hear primate-type vocalisations and witness violent tree-shaking on a ridge above them, local woman confirms she no longer enters those woods

A couple hiking Big Spring Gap Trail in the Otter Creek Wilderness became disoriented after several hours without trail markers and continued further into the forest. From a ridge roughly a hundred yards above them, they saw a large, dark silhouette moving between the trees. They then heard vocalisations they described at the time as monkey-like.

Years later, both witnesses separately heard Les Stroud imitate a similar sound during a television interview and connected it with what they had heard in West Virginia. In the original encounter, the sounds stopped before a thin tree on the ridge began shaking violently. The tree bent and thrashed against the surrounding growth.

The couple left quickly and emerged at a place locals call Panther Hollow. Outside a farmhouse, an elderly woman told them she no longer entered those woods because of the strange things that happened there. She also said her son would not go in without a firearm. The witness’s wife was a federal attorney at the time, and both witnesses kept the account private until filing this report. bfro

The Monongahela National Forest sits within Appalachian terrain that has produced persistent reports across state lines, including the Pennsylvania case covered in Bigfoot and Cryptid Canine Activity Reported at Bald Eagle State Park, Pennsylvania. The state boundary is less useful than the mountain chain when reading these reports.

🔍 High Strangeness Note: The local woman’s reaction gives the report its last piece of weight. She did not respond with surprise. She treated the woods as a known problem and said so plainly. That kind of local knowledge rarely reaches formal databases, but it often sits behind them, passed between neighbours until someone finally writes it down. Panther Hollow also carries older stories of a black panther seen on rocks in the area, placing this account inside a longer local record of anomalous animal reports.
